5 Reasons Why You Should Donate Clean Water

Donating clean water when there are countless other deserving causes in today’s world might not always be your first choice. Learn how your donation to support clean water for a community changes lives, in more ways than you think~

1. Increase hand hygiene

Handwashing has been declared the simplest most effective preventive measure amongst the COVID pandemic. Your support for clean and safe water makes hand hygiene possible for people and shields them from COVID-19. So far, Project Maji has reached 75,000 people with hand hygiene essentials and WASH trainings, including clean water.

2. Increase community health

Access to water significantly improves community health in the long-run. It protects people and particularly children from dangerous but preventable diseases such as diarrhoea, dysentery, cholera and countless others. Did you know? Diarrhoea alone steals the lives of 525,000 children under the age of five. When you help us provide clean water to rural communities you help us save these lives.

3. Send children to school

Easy access to clean water frees up time and energy for girls to go to school. Women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa are responsible for 72% of the water collected in the region. However, when Project Maji takes away this unnecessary burden off their shoulders, we see girls returning to schools. Little Matilda shares what it was like when she had to miss school to fetch water for her family. Thanks to a Maji Kiosk in her community, she can now be in school every day:

4. Increase community earning potential

When water is not easily available, communities pay the price with their time. The United Nations estimates that people in Sub-Saharan Africa alone lose 40 billion hours per year collecting water; the equivalent to an entire year’s labor in all of France! This is time that can be used to grow food, earn an income or even go to school, all of which help to break the cycle of poverty. Your donation helps people break free.

5. Restore hope

It improves lives, restores hope and brings the promise of a brighter future. Not only for the young but also the elderly. Ms. Kaloki is a good example. She has had her fair share of hard work carrying heavy jerry cans on her back for as long as she can remember. When we met her last February she said:

Lady in Ghana accessing donated water

“I can’t wait for the new solar pump to be installed. Then I will go sit on my porch and the young men can bring me fresh water!”

So, for us at Project Maji, It is not the installation of a Maji kiosk that counts, but the positive ripple effect of water that does. Over the past several years, we have seen countless lives transform simply due to access to water. Now we are on a mission to reach 1 million people with sustainable access to safe water and we invite you to join us in this life-changing mission!
